So, here I am, ending up live far up on the hill in a very remote area where the closest neighbor is a 15-minute drive. Don’t ask me about the cold cause it’s dead-freezing up here, under the chilly and windy weather. The sky looks so close that the stars seem like 5 meters above my head. Another amazing thing by being here is getting the chance to see the real, up-close wild animals around the premises. This really is an awesome experience.
As a volunteer, of course, I don’t need to pay a dime for anything. All the meals and accommodation is in exchange with my full day work on the farm. The fact working in the egg farm gets me dealing with the chicken every single time. Getting attacked by the chooks is part of my day job. My roles here include collecting, grading, cleaning and packaging eggs, feeding the chooks, and even sometimes I build sheds, other constructions or gardening. Sightseeing is every second of the day, bush walking to find any signal, riding 4WD ATV and any other awesome activities I could never think of, being here is a real experience of a wild life.
The flock has settled in well, and we are closing in on daily target of 400 eggs! Flock four will be here in two weeks and construction of their new roosting sheds is almost complete. We've also tried some of the hens and they taste great too. In the pipeline, we plan to get fish into the dams and some cows, sheep and goats. Complete self-sufficiency may not be possible, but it is the owner’s dream to produce most of his own food (and trade with other likeminded farmers), capture own water (which he already does) and also create own power.
I am enjoying many meals where all the meat, vegetables, fruit and herbs were all produced on the property. I guess life matters with whatever I have and whoever I’m with.
